Outside
(hatchingday musings)
by Rasha

Rain streaks the glass
Patchy sunlight, the occasional flash
Of lightning and noise
As life goes on
Outside

Another year goes by
Remembering beginnings now long past
Seasons turn
And I've seen a few
From the outside

There's a weight on my wings
Of many more years yet to come
Of a life I may not get to live
Of beginnings that have already
Come to an end
Sometimes it's hard to see
That the brightness is potential
And not just another gilded
Watery sunrise
I try to imagine
Seeing a hundred hundred hatchingdays
But the days I've seen
Already blur together

Things aren't as bad as they seem
They're certainly better than they used to be
It's just another rainy day
No big deal
On the outside

It's nice and warm inside
Dry and comfortable and even a bit safe
But I think I'll trade it in
For the cold and the mud
And the rain and the wind
For new air under my wings
And occasional sunshine
For a little bit of weather
Outside

Notes: On a rainy birthday/hatchingday, Rasha and I were feeling mopey because we couldn't get to AFD, and had been away for several months. I like to think of this as almost a song, though I'm not good enough with music to figure out a tune for it.
